Joe Baumgartner was raised in the Bay Area. He began his rodeo career in high school. He has fought bulls on the professional level for 20 years and has been an intrical part of Growney Brothers just as long. Joe attributes much of his success to NFR Livestock Superintendent Ted Groene who inspired him to be a bull fighter.
As a bullfighter Joe doesn't cover the bull for 8 seconds, like the the riders, he is in the arena with the bull for as long as it takes to get the rider to safety. Joe believes in protective bullfighting as opposed to competitive bullfighting because he feels strongly that it is the primary job of the bullfighter in the rodeo arena. He has traveled throughout the United States fighting bulls at some of the nations most prestigious rodeo and bull riding events.
As a legendary bullfighter, Joe is considered one of the best bull fighters in the world. He has been voted by the top bull riders in the world to work every Finals in PBR history. He has been to 14 NFRs. The cowboys know that he will put his life on the line to assure their safety.
Joe, his wife Melanie, and their two sons live in Red Bluff, California.
